Summary

DETECTIVE SUPERINTENDENT ROY GRACE INVESTIGATES

"Peter James has penetrated the inner workings of police procedures, and the inner thoughts and attitudes of real detectives, as no English crime writer before him" —The Times

NO BODY。 NO TRACE。
NO CRIME?

Niall and Eden Paternoster start their Sunday the same way they always do—with a long drive, a visit to a country house and a quick stop at the local supermarket on the way home。

But this Sunday ends differently—because while Niall waits and waits in the car park for Eden to pick up supplies, Eden never returns。 She’s not waiting for him at home, and none of their family or friends have heard from her。

Gone without a trace, Niall is arrested on suspicion of her murder。 When DS Roy Grace is called in to investigate, it doesn’t take long to realize that nothing is quite as it seems—and this might be his most mysterious case yet 。 。 。

Sunday Times number one bestseller Peter James returns with the latest installment in his award-winning Roy Grace novels—now a major TV series。

Great improvement on his recent books。 Good story + seems to be getting rid of some of the incidental stuff that detracted from main plot。

Another excellent storyline from Peter James, this one would make an excellent TV series or theatre production。 How long do I have to wait for the next one?

I have been a huge fan of Peter James' writing for many years, his first Roy Grace novel Dead Simple having been my first venture into the realms of crime novels。 Boy, did I choose a great book to get started with?? This series has grabbed me by the throat and not let go。 There's the perfect balance of personal, professional and criminal elements with just a hint of police corruption thrown in for good measure。 With such an enduring series readers might wonder whether it is losing its spark, and I have been a huge fan of Peter James' writing for many years, his first Roy Grace novel Dead Simple having been my first venture into the realms of crime novels。 Boy, did I choose a great book to get started with?? This series has grabbed me by the throat and not let go。 There's the perfect balance of personal, professional and criminal elements with just a hint of police corruption thrown in for good measure。 With such an enduring series readers might wonder whether it is losing its spark, and I have found that a few of the "episodes" haven't been quite as engaging as others。 This one however I feel is Peter back on form。 There are two main threads to the book: the dominant one being the Paternoster couple, where the husband has reported his wife having allegedly disappeared on a flying visit to the supermarket。 The other features heavily in Grace's personal life which I won't even discuss as it would be a huge spoiler。 I liked that there is also another story thread (or two) simmering away in Grace's professional life with his superior officer once again trying to influence the progress of his career。 The guy just doesn't give up!!It's great to see long term characters still working in the team, maybe a different side coming through for a couple of them this time which gives yet another slant to the ongoing series in order to keep it fresh。 There are some unexpected twists as you always expect from this author and a bit of a cliff hanger to say no more!Peter James just continues with his outstanding crime writing with this latest book。 There aren't many who can sustain a series as successfully as him。 Another full marks crime thriller in my opinion。 。。。more

For those of us who read multiple authors over the years, we had pretty much figured out what was going on early in the book。 Even the ending was not really a surprise。 However, it was well written and would have kept most folks guessing。 I was sad that the author felt that he had to die off a somewhat difficult character but on the other hand, I was overjoyed that someone finally goe their comeuppance。

Peter James gets better and better。 This was a fantastic story and there were several twists that I for one didn't forsee。 I can't wait for the next one。 I don't want to describe the story in case I spoil it for others。 Peter James gets better and better。 This was a fantastic story and there were several twists that I for one didn't forsee。 I can't wait for the next one。 I don't want to describe the story in case I spoil it for others。 。。。more

Superb page turner。 Loved it。Having thoroughly enjoyed reading the previous 16 Peter James novels featuring Roy Grace, I had high hopes of "Left you Dead"。To say that it didn't disappoint is an understatement, in fact I would include it in my top 3 of the series alongside "Dead Simple" & "Dead Man's Time"。 I'm not going to give any of the plot away as I don't think that should happen in a review, otherwise, what would be the point of reading the book ? Picking up this book for the first time and getting ready to read LEFT YOU DEAD, might feel a bit intimidating。 After all, the book clocks in at a shade under 500 pages。 You might feel a glimmer of hesitation, but all that will be thrown out the window the second you begin reading。 Before you know it, you are frantically turning pages, breezing through the book in record time。 This is because you are so intrigued by the chain of events in the book, needing to discover what is happening next。 Thi Picking up this book for the first time and getting ready to read LEFT YOU DEAD, might feel a bit intimidating。 After all, the book clocks in at a shade under 500 pages。 You might feel a glimmer of hesitation, but all that will be thrown out the window the second you begin reading。 Before you know it, you are frantically turning pages, breezing through the book in record time。 This is because you are so intrigued by the chain of events in the book, needing to discover what is happening next。 This is book seventeen in the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series, with some startling revelations coming to light。 The book begins with Niall and Eden Paternoster out for a Sunday excursion。 Eden suddenly announces that they need kitty litter for their cat and he lets his wife out to go into the store to pick up a bag。 Earlier, the two had been arguing, as they often did, the two never fully seeing eye to eye。 Niall waits in his car for a long time, then wonders what is taking Eden so long。 He goes into the store to find her, but it appears she never entered。 He finally heads home thinking she will be there。 She is not, nowhere in sight, not even returning the next day。 He calls police who interview him。 As the facts emerge they consider him a suspect who may have killed her。 There is blood in the house, and when they investigate further they find her passport, wedding rings, and other items carefully hidden in the house。 This bring Roy Grace and fellow officers onto the scene, convinced he is responsible for the disappearance。 The more facts they find and dispute many of Niall’s claims about being with his wife last, and having pictures taken with her the day she disappeared, the more readers wonder if somehow he is guilty as well。 But there are a few twisty turns involving Niall’s partner who he has been cheating with。 She also happens to be Eden’s boss。 And there is another unexpected storyline involving Roy and his wife’s son, and an accident that turns into something horrific and sad。 Peter James has packed a lot into this book, and there is no filler at all the to the book。 Police procedurals can sometime be a bit tedious, but not this one。 It is hypnotically mesmerizing all the way。 LEFT YOU DEAD, leaves readers with a truly powerful story and emotional ride。 。。。more

The one clear problem I felt going into reading this book was the long-lost son of Roy Grace。 He is definitely a psychopath in the making。 I'm glad the author redirected that story line because there was no way out of that locked room。 So the story is a type of "locked room" story about a man and a woman。 The woman disappears。 All evidence points to her husband killing her and burying her。 Is that what happened? This is my first book in the Roy Grace series, and so I definitely felt a slight disconnect from the series, but the author did a good job of making sure the reader is aware of the material facts of the series so far, so I never felt too lost。 However, I imagine if you read the entire series, you'd be very attached to the characters。The scenes were beautifully written and as a law grad, I thoroughly enjoyed trying to imagine what the prosecution's case would have been。 The twists were great, alt This is my first book in the Roy Grace series, and so I definitely felt a slight disconnect from the series, but the author did a good job of making sure the reader is aware of the material facts of the series so far, so I never felt too lost。 However, I imagine if you read the entire series, you'd be very attached to the characters。The scenes were beautifully written and as a law grad, I thoroughly enjoyed trying to imagine what the prosecution's case would have been。 The twists were great, although I did manage to solve it after some initial doubts of my understanding of the story/facts!Definitely read it if you like to doubt yourself on the evidence presented!! 。。。more

I am reading Peter James and this character Roy Grace for the first time。 So there are 2 stories going on in parallel in this book。 1st is the main plot which is what this book is all about which is an interesting plot and I really liked it。 But the other story of Roy Grace's own is I assume being carried forwarded since the start of this series, is really boring part。 I literally had to scan through and skip if required。 Besides I don't require to go through the previous books to understand Roy I am reading Peter James and this character Roy Grace for the first time。 So there are 2 stories going on in parallel in this book。 1st is the main plot which is what this book is all about which is an interesting plot and I really liked it。 But the other story of Roy Grace's own is I assume being carried forwarded since the start of this series, is really boring part。 I literally had to scan through and skip if required。 Besides I don't require to go through the previous books to understand Roy Grace much as Author has given almost all the information in the book。 This is the only thing that I liked in the Roy Grace's story。 Overall I find this as an average read and will give only 3 stars。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this clever episode with DI Grace。 It was almost a perfect tight crime read of a "no body" murder。My only reservations were the rather daft (in my opinion) attempts to add another dimension to the detectives by mulling over literary quotations (which, in fact were incorrectly attributed)。 Similarly, Cleo, (Grace's wife) whose "intelligence" is implicit keeps spouting pearls of wisdom from books she is reading or from memory。 Rather than give substance, I felt they just stood out I really enjoyed this clever episode with DI Grace。 It was almost a perfect tight crime read of a "no body" murder。My only reservations were the rather daft (in my opinion) attempts to add another dimension to the detectives by mulling over literary quotations (which, in fact were incorrectly attributed)。 Similarly, Cleo, (Grace's wife) whose "intelligence" is implicit keeps spouting pearls of wisdom from books she is reading or from memory。 Rather than give substance, I felt they just stood out like a sore thumb, and were an unwelcome distraction from the pace of the narrative 。。。more

This was my second Peter James book but the first in the Roy Grace series as I usually don't like series of police procedurals in books。 Peter James sure knows a lot about police procedures and protocols。 He spends so many pages on explaining the simplest procedures that anybody who ever watched a CSI show knows anyway。 One gets the feeling he needs to fill the pages。 Usually book contracts include a minimum number of pages。 The same goes for his son's Bruno's death。 He wants to show how emotion This was my second Peter James book but the first in the Roy Grace series as I usually don't like series of police procedurals in books。 Peter James sure knows a lot about police procedures and protocols。 He spends so many pages on explaining the simplest procedures that anybody who ever watched a CSI show knows anyway。 One gets the feeling he needs to fill the pages。 Usually book contracts include a minimum number of pages。 The same goes for his son's Bruno's death。 He wants to show how emotionally frail an experienced police detective can still be。 That's ok, but this death is absolutely irrelevant to the plot of the book。 He suffered a similar loss with his first wife。 He describes that in depth here too。 He sees similarities in those those deaths and surmises suicide in both but in the end this question remains unanswered。 The plot itself reminded me of 'Gone Girl' by Gillian Flynn。 Of course, he added a few twists, especially the end is different。 But as in 'I follow you' he reveals the plot about midway through the book。 That takes a lot of suspense out of it right there。 This again follows about the same pattern as in 'Gone Girl'。 The whole thing would have been a little more plausible if Eden, the wife, had chosen a different method of disappearing。 Going to the store with your husband and just leave him in his car waiting for her while she hops into her accomplice's car is really far-fetched。 She leaves her philandering husband to take up with her female boss in a lesbian relationship。 The police is not really credible failing the follow the trail of money right at the beginning。 So the plot overall is a little thin。 The ending is really too hollywoodesque。 What saves the book is that Peter James is a good writer。 It's good entertainment but not a superb thriller。 。。。more
